TICK TOCK Chapter 11 (Part: 2)

“She’s not going to help you, is she?” Luke asked as he paced the floor, sweat forming on his brow. He was anxious and it showed.
I shook my head. “What’s going to happen to me, Luke?” I asked in a whisper, afraid of his response.
“At this point in time, I’m more worried about what’s going to happen to me, you stupid little bitch. I’m dead!”
I started crying, the only thing I knew how to do as of late. I was terrified because I knew that soon, very soon, I was going to be hurt in some way. I cried until I was exhausted and then I told myself that no matter what happened, I had to toughen up, it was my only chance of getting through the unknown that was heading my way.
“I am so sorry, Luke.” I croaked, my voice raw. “I’m just an idiot. I feel as if I’m waiting for a death sentence, I’m so scared.
"You are! Not only have you signed your death sentence, but you’ve also signed mine as well.” He said as he slumped against the cold metal wall.
“There must be something we can do,” I sobbed again. “Tell me what I can do. I’ll do anything.”
“Be careful what you ask for, Dani, because once the main man gets involved, it’s out of my hands then. For fuck’s sake, how did we end up in this position? What possessed you to tip those drugs down the fucking toilet?” He banged the side of the container again and put his head in his hands, clearly distraught.
I felt numb. There was nothing more I could say. I’d made the biggest mistake of my life and I had to face whatever consequences came my way. I was sure that something could be worked out, maybe if I offered to get three jobs I’d be able to pay back what I owed, and I was sure that once my mother returned home that she would part with maybe ten or twenty thousand. That way, Luke would be OK and it would all work out. I knew I was being delusional, but if I didn’t hang on to that, I had nothing.
“I will be leaving now, Dani. You might not see me again because fuck knows what’s going to happen once boss man finds out how careless I’ve been.”
I run up to him and grab him, burying my head in his shoulder and repeating the word sorry over and over, while I inhale the musky scent of his aftershave and body odour.
Luke gently pulls me off him. He looks defeated and he turns to me as he walks out of the container. “No matter what happens, I loved you and I never cheated on you. I was just mucking about.”
With that, he closes the door on the container and on a chapter of my life that I may never get back. A chapter that I wish I could re-write, because I knew the next chapter of my life was not going to be pleasant.
